Turning It Over
I tried to write but the words got stuck,
So I sat quietly and prayed.
Then opened the Bible to a page and read:
“I will tell you what to say.”
Familiar waves of disbelief
And doubt began to swell.
I looked down once more and read:
“I will help you speak well.”
Paralyzed by what my eyes
Were seeing on the page,
I forced myself to go outside
In the early morning haze.
I walked into a shaft of light
Streaming through the woods.
An unknown warmth came over me
And held me where I stood.
Something made me turn around
And look up in the tall pine tree.
I caught my breath in wonderment--
It was the heron I’d longed to see.
My eyes seemed new
And as he flew
I felt the words break free.
And cried for an hour
Knowing the power
Of God
Was now in me.
